I am practicing "simple graphs but complex outputs". Complexity can emerge from simple rules but interaction of many small elements at local level. These interactions happen through feedback loops in space and time causing echo and ripples. From these local interactions - global new behavior emerge - this behavior hasn't been designed or programmed yet it happens anyway.
