Concept art sketching in Substance Designer

Procedural Sketching for Concept Art — Substance Designer

This project explores a new workflow in Substance Designer, extending it beyond material authoring into real-time concept design and scene generation.

At its core is a custom ray–implicit surface solver, enabling direct rendering of 3D implicit geometry inside Substance Designer’s Pixel Processor. Instead of relying on traditional mesh pipelines or ray marching, this approach treats any scalar field as renderable geometry, unlocking a new design space.

Using this method, I built an “alien” exterior environment by:

Constructing 3D implicit forms (surfaces defined mathematically)
Displacing them with procedural noises and patterns native to Substance Designer
Rendering directly in-graph, without external tools

Because everything remains procedural and node-based, the system becomes a fully integrated pipeline:

Geometry, shading, and lighting inside SD
Post-processing via standard nodes (color, masks, screen-space effects)
Fast iteration and controlled variation
Natural extension to animation and sequence generation

This transforms Substance Designer into a procedural sketching engine for concept art, where complex scenes can be explored, modified, and scaled rapidly.

Key idea:
Procedural fields → geometry → rendering → post → variation
All within a single unified system.

This approach opens a path toward:

High-speed concept iteration
Generative environment design
System-driven visual exploration
All in Substance Designer
